Yes, of course this would not have happened had they not been friends and had that underlying bond already. But I think we may be bringing too much OTP to the story to discount the ways in which the story clearly foregrounds their straight desires early on in the story and their self-discovery much more than discovering their love for the other.
I don't think so--I mean, I don't think it has anything to do with an OTP reading, believing that there must be more underlying what we're seeing in order for the sex to have happened. I mean, to say "well, of course they had sex, it has nothing to do with any deeper feelings they might have for each other, no OTP issues"--that's my disconnect. They have sex...why? Why would two straight guys who've suddenly been zapped into women's bodies decide to have sex, in the first place? This seems like the right time for sex? This seems like the right person for sex? Why? I mean, seriously, when you think about it, if there isn't anything larger underlying their overt feelings and behaviors--even if it isn't sexual, even if it's manly trust and deep friendship and very special buddiness, why? What motivates them to have sex with each other? Doesn't make any sense, from a logical standpoint, unless there was something, you know, motivating them to want to have sex with each other. You see them as entirely straight, not in the least interested in each other in any intimate way, not especially close, etc.--so, why would they had sex? The strangeness of their situation would tend to push your average guy away from the idea of having sex, especially in a woman's body, with another guy, especially one that he works with, even if that guy is in an attractive woman's body at the moment. Are they such incredible horndogs that they can't control themselves, even in this very weird and uncomfortable situation that they find themselves in? That's the question I ask myself, and I have to answer, logically, that there must be reason, must be some draw between them, a bond and a trust level greater than just two guys who work together, for this to have happened at all. I don't think that's OTP goggles, I think that's just, you know, logic. Why do you think they had sex? (I know you've mentioned the shared strangeness of their situation, the desire for community, etc., and I can see that inspiring them to spend a lot of time together, commiserating, but sex? No, that's a leap beyond that I don't see them taking without some other underlying motivation.)
