I'm kind of too tired for serious meta, but I just read Straight as a Circle and it made me so happy! Now that's my kind of WNG, let me tell you. These three stories together are just such a happy place of queer fanfiction for me. They all cover both the painful things and the joyful things about negotiating a complex relationship with identity and sexuality – the sex and the way the sex interacts with the way you see yourself and others see you, playing out in the difficulty of negotiating the fissures in an identity based around chosen dissidence, in the opposite of that when dissidence is chosen over the actually available option of biological normativity, and the mutual realisation of dissidence that becomes the choice of a mutually constructed new identity.
I'm kind of too tired to do more depth right now and I need to put my mental energies into my work right now... but this essay and these stories make me immensely grateful for fandom right now. Because the best thing about all of them may be the way they perhaps could have been written without the fannish context and infrastructure, but they would only have been a tiny fraction as good.
