I didn't see anyone who saw it as an allegory getting the wrong message about subs. I didn't see anything in John's characterisation that portrayed him as in any way feminine. The fact that he was constantly harrassed and expected to stay at home and not have a job is what was feminine. But that is how subs were treated in that world. Nowhere did the fic try to say that all subs or subs in real life face those circumstances. Of course they don't, because our world is not set up like that.
