Do you think Helen's story reflects badly on Xanthe's? I don't. I see Helen's story as taking Xanthe's universe and saying, 'What if...' Just like fanfiction takes the canon universe and says, 'What if....'
I'm not sure Helen's story has a feminist purpose, other than to use a new dynamic to describe some of the issues women have faced in Western society, and then use that description as the backdrop for a love story.
