Well, see, Helen's story isn't about the D/s relationship. It uses the terms as a jumping off point, but to me, it's about what it was like to be a woman who wanted to break through the glass ceiling in the 1960's/1970's or the military in the 1980's. While we still have to deal with sexism to a certain extent now, it's different from the rigid cultural sexism of that era. And John's experiences are the experiences of the women first breaking though one of the barriers; that's the whole focus of the story, and how his wants keep crashing into the rigid roles that society has defined around him.
So that's why I say this isn't a D/s story, but it is great SF because it transliterates issues present in our world and our history into another culture to explore what would happen. It's not really about the whole Dom/Sub thing.
