I know I've been obsessed with SGA for over a year, and a huge part of that is dissecting the episodes and the characters and noticing the details. On the fifth viewing, all the little things start to delight that much more, because they're something new. It's all part of being an active viewer, which then carries over to my fanfiction reading experience.
Characterization is the main thing (after awkward writing) that will make me stop reading a story, I agree. And my range of acceptable characterization is far narrower in SGA than it's been in other fandoms, which presents its own difficulties.
