I think the ZPM rate of use varies with the demands of the plot - I was reading transcripts to confirm a few things for a story I'm writing (see: research. So much research), and Rodney says something about the power being used by the shields during the Wraith bombardment. So it could depend on how many systems the ZPM is asked to power? (This is where I complain about the Naquadah Mark II generators from Siege 2 - watch out for the plot contrivance button!) I do think that an author should make the effort to come up with some sort of an explanation if they're going to try to write a story about ZPM burnout or something. Although there are a lot of those stories where I don't buy the technical fiction either.
