I always feel like fanfiction grants the opportunity to try to make nonsensical science or military practice *make* sense. Or at least, to try to do something with inconsistencies. Atlantis isn't anywhere near SG-1 in this respect, but reconciling differences as the years go past will surely become tougher.
Instant aging! I remember watching the first season of SG-1 and wincing as Jack got old, then young again - it didn't make sense there and I think only the general funkiness of the Wraith save it on SGA (at least for me).
The stories that really blow me away are those that are jam-packed full of plot and people and setting and action and still seem to get it all right, in that nothing seems to be wrong, you know?
Yes, I know just what you mean, and long for more of those gems. It's strange, I've become much more demanding over the past five or so years. Even with original fiction - I tend to notice contradictions or causal gaps in a narrative much more than I used to.
