You're totally right, there isn't a one-to-one, b/c for one thing, there are various permutations in which the main protagonists can relate to one another...i mention above the john in rising:rodney analogy and the rodney talking to atlantis like john does, so there is a parallelism between them on top of the john/atlantis parallels... But that makes it more powerful and offers more varied readings...which is always of the good, right?
And the fact that the Atlanteans couldn't live the same way, that he noit only destroyed the city's potential but also the community it had created and he was part of...yes!!! [well, now I'm writing myself back around to your original idea LOL hey, you said it :-)]
