Ah, the last is a good point (though i'm pretty sure i saw a few of those as well).
But, really, i have ultimately little interest in evaluating a story. My intent was mostly to describe what she's doing and what effects this may or may not have on the reader. To me, intertextuality is fascinating and one of the most interesting things about fanfic (i.e., one of the reasons I enjoy fanfic more than a lot of profic). But to me that also means intertextuality with the fantext. So, yes, your reaction points to the very thing that I liked about the story, though I guess the differnce of opinion we have is that you think it left a large hole whereas from the reviews I've seen I was under the impression that one could read it without the fantext background...granted getting less out of it, but not going wtf or be totally lost.
But it clearly didn't work for you. Then again, I'd hesitate to make general value judgments on personal responses.
Or more generally: I think any story is harder to read out of context. Any story gains with contextual knowledge. The question is whether it becomes so relianyt on that intertextuality as to become indecipherable to non-knowledgeable readers... i think in all cases, it will be les pleasurable, if that makes sense...
