(It's odd to realise that the other SG character who seems to touch a similar darkness is Daniel. It's the contrast, I think, that makes the dark so disturbing.)
You know, I don't think I've read much dark Daniel. And the attraction to that would come from a different place, for me, but be similarly intense, yeah. Because of that difference, the distance from light to dark.
It might be that we see John only through Rodney's eyes, and it's so easy to identify with Rodney. Easy to feel Rodney's emotions, his fear of/for John.
Oh, wow, yes, I definitely see that. I think that it's through Rodney's eyes that we're seeing this, that it's not from an omniscient POV and because it is Rodney, really adds. Very true.
I've yet to read Rodney having sex with a woman and not want to scratch my head.
I have trouble taking Rodney seriously as a lover of women, too. But I've read some Rodney/Elizabeth recently that worked for me (something I thought I could NEVER buy), and this does too. I guess it just takes the right writer, as always.
