I felt that one of the things she succeeded in doing was keeping Rodney's charm... I also felt that I understood why John was attracted to him... John seemed to find some of Rodney's harder to take traits amusing right from the beginning, and he recognized Rodney's loneliness, because he felt it too.
Yes, exactly, this is how I saw it too. The all-important dynamic was there, and that's one of the most important things for me as a reader.
