I feel gloomy that this is such a widely-recommended story, and that people new to Atlantis will read it and then take its interpretation of these characters as the template for the canon of the show itself.
As several others have already said, I doubt you've got much to worry about. Any newbie worth their salt is going to be able to make up their own mind on the matter. Also, I don't think contrasting view of the characters are a bad thing. There does seem to be a movement with the newer converts to the fandom away from the softer Rodney those of us who've been around since the beginning are more familiar with seeing in fic, but I actually find it quite refreshing, and I'm glad that people are thinking independently about it. Yes, I think this particular story is a little unbalanced with regards to his character, but I don't think it's any worse than a lot of other widely-recc'd stories, just at the opposite end of the scale.
